France’s first barometer on the digital maturity of mid-sized companies

15% of mid-sized companies questioned have recruited a Chief Digital Officer (CDO)

Paris, 25 January 2017 Apax Partners and EY have published the first barometer on the digital maturity of mid-sized companies. Based on a survey carried out on 100 French mid-sized companies from 1 January to 30 June 2016, this barometer provides an overview of digital maturity among mid-sized companies in France*.

Key takeaways:

– 23% of respondents have entered into a partnership with one or more start-up incubators.

– 15% of respondents have recruited a Chief Digital Officer (CDO).

– 35% of companies do not feel ready to take on the challenges posed by digital technologies. 34% are aware of the issues but have not yet started their digital transformation. 32% of the companies have a high degree of digital maturity, focusing either on a digital technology watch and Big Data (20% of respondents), or on optimising marketing initiatives (11%).

– 70% of companies questioned have not invested in training their employees in the challenges of digital technology.

– 83% of companies questioned do not analyse the behavioural data of their customers (mailings, customer relationships, website visits).

“The level of a company’s digital maturity depends more on the willingness of a company’s chief executive than on its size. Company executives are not necessarily well-versed in the subject and tend to confuse digital transformation with technology. As proof, only 19% of the companies questioned have a Chief Digital Officer, while the others are still making do with an IT director”, explained Eddie Misrahi, Chairman of Apax Partners.

“The results of our study show that French mid-size companies are falling behind in their digital transformation and are estimated to be over two years behind CAC 40 companies. They are only just beginning to be aware of the importance of digital technologies, but have not yet learned all the lessons, in particular with regard to training. The mid-sized companies we studied did not all display the same characteristics. There were in some cases quite significant disparities between them in terms of their readiness for dealing with the digitalisation of their ecosystem, often linked to the nature of their business,” explained Pierre Jouanne, an EY partner.

*Digital maturity is assessed according to a set of parameters, four of which reveal advanced maturity:
– Use of data scientists and analytics technology
– Work organisation (collaborative work, use of agile work methods)
– Website use (website monitoring and mobile website)
– Quality of digital service
